The European Audiovisual Observatory has released an updated edition of the report "The Circulation of European films outside Europe". The study looks at the volume and the theatrical performance of European films in 12 non-European sample markets, including North America, six Latin American markets, China and South Korea, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The analysis is based on 2017 data and complemented by a five-year data series for the period 2013 to 2017.
The European Commission has launched a consultation on the exercise of rights of performers and producers in the audiovisual sector. Its objective is to gather information and data on current market practices and on the exercise of these rights in order to assess if there is a need for extending their term of protection as required by Directive 2011/77/EU.
Facilitating online cross border circulation of works through a modernisation of the EU copyright framework is one of President Juncker‘s priorities, as set out in its July 2014 political guidelines “We can ensure that consumers can access services, music, movies and sports events on their electronic devices wherever they are in Europe and regardless of borders.”
Besides political and legislative initiatives, the Commission has launched several competition exercises.
A new EU study recommends to include the film literacy in school curricula, and to promote the establishment of general rules for licensing schemes, contributing to a wider use of films and other audiovisual content in European Schools.
France has launched an online catalogue of VoD legal offers. Its objective is to promote visibility of the online legal offer of cinematographic works. The tool is available here: http://vad.cnc.fr/
